A 5GG knit is a low gauge, chunky knit made with larger stitches, so it looks thick and bold and tends to feel substantial. It is the jumper you wear as the main event.
What does 5GG mean?
GG stands for gauge, the number of needles per inch on the knitting machine. At 5GG there are fewer needles, which means bigger stitches and a bulkier fabric. For a wider explanation, see what GG means in knitwear.
What does chunky knitwear look like?
You can see every stitch. The surface has depth and shadow, and the shape usually sits away from the body. It looks relaxed and a little dramatic, which is why it works so well in autumn and winter.
Is chunky knit warm?
Thicker knits generally trap more air, so they often feel warm. The yarn matters too, so judge it by touch and by how it is described, not by gauge alone.
How do you wear it?
Keep the rest of the outfit calm and let the knit lead:
- Straight or tapered trousers in a darker shade
- Clean trainers or boots
- A simple tee underneath, or a collar if you want it sharper
- A cap or beanie in a matching tone
Can you layer a chunky knit under a coat?
You can, but go up a size on the coat or pick a roomy shape. Otherwise it gets tight across the shoulders. If you want a knit that slips under a jacket, a finer gauge is easier. Our UK winter layering guide covers the balance.
How should you care for it?
Chunky knits stretch when wet and heavy, so be gentle. Wash cool or by hand if the label allows, press the water out without wringing, and dry flat. Fold it for storage instead of hanging it. Our guide to caring for knitwear has the full routine. One more thing: chunky knits show off best against simple backdrops, so wear plain trousers and let the texture be the detail. Colour also behaves differently. Deep shades look rich in thick stitches, while pale shades pick up shadow and show off the texture even more. Pick a tone you already wear a lot, so the jumper slots in easily, then build outfits around it.
