How to Style a Black Hoodie: 7 Outfit Ideas

If I could only keep one piece in my wardrobe, it would be a black hoodie. It is easy, it is warm and it works with more than people think. Here are seven ways to wear one without it looking lazy.

1. The classic

Black hoodie, straight-leg jeans, clean white trainers. Nothing clever, nothing wrong. Keep the hoodie fitted through the shoulders so it does not swallow you.

2. Tonal black

Black hoodie, black sweatpants, black cap. Head to toe in one colour looks deliberate when the fabrics are good. Break it up with white socks or a pair of light trainers.

3. Under a coat

A hoodie under a long wool coat is a winter favourite. Tuck the hood inside the coat collar so it sits neatly, or leave it down and let it frame the neck.

4. With tailored trousers

Dark pleated trousers, black hoodie, leather shoes. It looks like you meant to do it, because you did. This is the one that surprises people.

5. Layered with a gilet

Black hoodie, dark gilet over the top, cap, jeans. Warm, practical and sharp. If you are layering, make sure the hood sits flat under the gilet.

6. Under a zip jacket

Open zip jacket over a hoodie, with the hood out. It is a relaxed look for travel days and long errands.

7. With a shirt collar showing

A white shirt collar peeking out from under a plain hoodie is a small detail that lifts the whole outfit. Keep the hoodie plain for this one.

A few rules that always help

  • Wash it inside out and air dry when you can, so black stays black
  • Keep it clean. A black hoodie covered in lint looks tired quickly.
  • Check the length. It should end at your hip, not halfway down your thighs.

Why black?

Black is quiet. It lets the fit, the fabric and you do the talking. That is the idea behind everything we make at More Amoure.

The Amoure Hoodie (£65) is where we would start for any of these looks.
