How to Look After Puff Print and Embroidered Clothing

The details on a piece, like puff print and embroidery, are often what make it special. They also need a bit more care than plain fabric. Here is how to keep them looking sharp.

Always follow the care label on your piece first. This is general guidance.

What is puff print?

Puff print is a raised, soft print. It sits slightly above the fabric and has a rounded, almost three-dimensional look. It is made by adding a special ink that expands when heated.

Washing

  • Turn the garment inside out so the print is protected
  • Wash cool, around 30 degrees
  • Use a gentle cycle with a low spin
  • Skip bleach and strong detergents
  • Avoid washing with items that have zips or velcro that could scratch the print

Drying

  • Air dry where you can, away from direct heat
  • Do not tumble dry on high. Heat can crack or flatten raised prints.
  • Do not iron directly on the print. If you must press the garment, turn it inside out and use a cloth.

Embroidery

Embroidery is sturdier but still benefits from care:

  • Wash inside out
  • Trim any loose threads with scissors, do not pull them
  • Press from the reverse side with a cloth between iron and fabric

Storing

Fold carefully so the print is not pressed against rough surfaces. Do not stack heavy items on top for long periods.

Fixing small problems

Print looks flat. A little steam from a distance can help lift it.

Light cracking. This is usually down to heat or rough washing. Gentle care from now on will stop it getting worse.

Fluff on the print. Lift it off with a lint roller or a piece of tape.
