How to Choose a Cap That Fits (and How to Wear It Well)

A cap is the quickest way to change an outfit. It is also easy to get wrong. A few simple checks make all the difference.

Know your shape

The crown. This is the part that sits on your head. Structured crowns hold a firm shape. Unstructured ones are softer and sit closer to the head. If you want a clean, sharp look, go structured. If you want something relaxed, go unstructured.

The brim. A curved brim is easier to wear day to day. A flat brim is more of a statement. If you are not sure, start curved.

The profile. Low profile caps sit closer to the head and suit most face shapes. High profile caps give a bolder look.

Getting the fit right

  • It should sit snug but not pinch. You should be able to slide a finger under the band.
  • The front should sit just above your eyebrows.
  • If it has an adjustable strap, set it so the cap stays put when you shake your head gently.

A cap that is too loose slides about. One that is too tight gives you a headache and a red line on your forehead.

Pick the right colour

Black is the safest and works with almost everything. Neutrals like cream, stone and grey are easy to pair. If you want to add colour, pick one that matches something else you are wearing.

A good rule: keep the cap and your shoes in the same colour family.

How to wear it

  • Wear it straight on, not pulled down too low
  • Keep it clean. A dirty cap undoes the whole outfit.
  • With tailored pieces, choose a plain cap with small branding
  • With casual layers, you can be a bit looser

Looking after it

Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not put structured caps in the washing machine. Air dry and store them somewhere they will not get squashed.
