Ordering clothes online is a gamble when you do not know your size. A tape measure and five minutes fix that. Here is how.
What you need
- A soft tape measure
- A well-fitting hoodie or jacket you already own and love, as a comparison
- A friend if you can, because it is easier
Measure your body
Chest. Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms. Keep it level and snug, not tight.
Shoulders. Measure from the edge of one shoulder to the other across your back.
Length. Measure from the base of your neck to where you want the hoodie to end, usually at your hip.
Sleeve. From the shoulder edge to the wrist, with your arm slightly bent.
Measure a hoodie you already own
This is the most accurate method. Lay the hoodie flat and measure:
- Across the chest, armpit to armpit, then double it
- Shoulder seam to shoulder seam
- Top of the shoulder to the hem
- Shoulder seam to the cuff
Compare these to the size chart. If a number sits between two sizes, go with the one that matches how you like to wear it.
Fitted or roomy?
- If you want a clean, close fit, choose the size closest to your measurements
- If you like it relaxed, go up one size
- If you are layering a lot, go up one size
Reading a size chart
Check whether the chart shows body measurements or garment measurements. Garment charts show the size of the clothing itself, so you need to allow for ease. Body charts show who the size is designed for.
When you are unsure
Between sizes, choose the bigger one for hoodies and jackets. A slightly roomy hoodie looks intentional. A tight one rarely does.
