How to Run a Charity Raffle at a Community Event

A raffle is one of the simplest ways to raise money at an event. People like a chance to win, and prizes can often be donated. We ran one at Caps & Cans, and this is what we learned.

First, check the rules

In the UK, raffles and lotteries have rules about how they are run, how tickets are sold and how money is handled. They can differ depending on the type of event. Check the Gambling Commission guidance before you plan anything, and ask the venue or charity if they have rules.

This post is general advice, not legal advice.

Get prizes

  • Ask local businesses by email, in person or on social media
  • Be clear about who the money is for
  • Explain what you can give back, like a mention on social media
  • Be specific about the type of prize you are after
  • Say thank you, whether they say yes or no

Experiences, vouchers and products all make good prizes. Escape rooms, days out and gift cards are especially popular.

Price the tickets

Keep it simple. Something like £2 a ticket, or three for £5, is easy to remember and easy to sell. Offer card and cash if you can.

Make it visible

  • Display the prizes on a table or poster so people can see what they could win
  • Put the ticket price clearly on a sign
  • Share the prizes on social media beforehand

Run the draw

Pick a time and announce it. Draw in front of people. Have someone check tickets and read out the winners. Make it a moment with a bit of fun.

Keep records

Record ticket sales and money taken. Know how many tickets were sold, who won and what happens with leftover prizes.

After the event

  • Thank everyone who gave prizes
  • Share the total raised and the winners if they are happy to be named
  • Give the money to the charity as promised

The best part

People love to give when there is a reason, and a raffle gives them one. Add some music and food and it becomes a proper community moment.
