Plenty of people want to give but feel they cannot afford to. I understand. But giving regularly, even a little, changes how you think about money and what it is for.
Start with a number
Pick an amount you can give every month without worry. It could be 2% of your income, or it could be £5. The amount matters less than the habit.
Some people use a tithe, which is 10%. That is what we do with our profit. If 10% is too much right now, start smaller and build.
Give first, not last
Set up your giving as soon as you are paid, before other spending. Whatever is left after bills and treats is rarely enough. Treat it as a bill you want to pay.
Choose where it goes
- A local foodbank
- A charity that matters to you personally
- A church or community group
- A cause close to home you can see
Local giving has an extra benefit. You can see the difference it makes.
Make it automatic
A standing order or direct debit takes the effort out of it. You will not forget and you will not talk yourself out of it.
Give in other ways too
Money is only one form of giving. You can also give:
- Time. An hour or two to volunteer.
- Skills. Help with a website, a poster, a spreadsheet.
- Things. Clothes, books or food you do not need.
- Attention. Check in on someone who is lonely.
Keep it humble
Giving is not about being seen. You do not need to announce it. The satisfaction is quieter than that.
Review it now and then
Every few months, check in. Can you give a little more? Is the charity still the right one? Are you giving with gladness?
Why we talk about it
Givers never lack is our belief at More Amoure. We think a generous life is a full one, whatever the size of the bank balance.
