How to Wear a Gilet With a Shirt and Tie

A gilet is one of those pieces that does more than it looks like it should. Throw it over a shirt and tie and the whole outfit relaxes. It stops looking like a uniform and starts looking like you.

Why it works

A gilet adds a layer without adding bulk on your arms. That means your shirt sleeves stay clean, your tie sits properly, and you get warmth where you need it. It also breaks up the formality of a shirt and tie just enough to look current.

Getting the fit right

  • Length. It should finish around your hip or just below your belt. Any longer and it fights with your jacket line.
  • Shoulders. The seam should sit where your shoulder ends. If it droops, go down a size.
  • Room. You should be able to wear a shirt and a thin knit underneath without it pulling across the chest.

Colours that work

Dark and neutral shades are the safest. Black, charcoal, navy and stone all sit well over white or pale blue shirts. If your tie is patterned, keep the gilet plain. If your tie is plain, you can play with a slightly bolder gilet colour.

Three ways to wear it

The office. Pale shirt, dark tie, dark gilet, tailored trousers. Loosen the tie slightly. Finish with clean leather shoes or minimal trainers.

The commute. Same base, but add a lightweight coat over the top on cold days. The gilet works as your warm middle layer.

After work. Open the top button, loosen or remove the tie, zip the gilet up. Instant change of mood without going home first.

A small detail that matters

Keep your tie shorter than you think. With a gilet on top, a tie that hangs too low will poke out at the bottom and ruin the line. The tip should sit around your belt buckle.

For everyone, in every kind of work

The best thing about a gilet is that it fits many lives. A doctor between shifts, someone in an office, a chef heading home, a teacher on playground duty. Different jobs, same piece. That is how we think about our clothes at More Amoure: made for people who work, who serve and who give.
