The knitwear colour combinations that always work are simple two tone ones: cream and green, black and cream, burgundy and cream, and cobalt blue and cream. Cream does the heavy lifting, so the second colour gets room to stand out without shouting.
Why cream is the best partner
Cream is softer than white and warmer than grey. Next to a deeper colour it lifts it, and next to black it stops the look feeling flat. That is why we keep coming back to it when we sample colourways.
Cream and green
Calm, a little bit heritage, and easy to wear. Pair it with dark trousers or washed denim and keep everything else quiet. We went deeper in Cream and Green Outfit Ideas.
Black and cream
The safest pair and still the sharpest. It works with black jeans, grey sweatpants and almost everything in between. If you only try one combination, try this one.
Burgundy and cream
Warm, rich and made for autumn. Try it with charcoal or navy trousers. Burgundy next to black can feel moody, but next to cream it feels friendlier.
Cobalt blue and cream
The loudest of the four, in a good way. Let it be the one bright thing in the outfit: dark denim or black trousers, plain trainers, nothing else competing.
Which trousers go with which knit?
- Black trousers: any of the four
- Dark denim: cream and green, cobalt and cream
- Grey sweatpants: black and cream, burgundy and cream
- Stone or beige trousers: black and cream, burgundy and cream
Can you wear two bright colours together?
You can, but give one of them the lead. If the knit is cobalt, keep the trousers and shoes neutral. Two loud pieces will fight each other. For the thinking behind this, read Colour Coordination in Streetwear.
Keep everything else simple
When the knit has two colours, the rest of the outfit can stay plain. Choose one neutral for the trousers and one for your shoes, and let the knit do the talking.
