10 Lessons From Running a Pop-Up Shop

We have run pop-ups in Manchester, including Caps & Cans at the Cupra City Garage. We learned a lot. If you are planning your own, these might save you some time.

1. Pick the venue carefully

Foot traffic matters, but so does the feel. A space that suits your brand does more than a busy one that does not. Ask what is allowed, such as music, drinks and sales.

2. Check the rules early

Ask the venue about licences, insurance, opening times and what you can sell. Do it before you promote anything.

3. Have a reason to come

A pop-up with no reason is a shop. A pop-up with a cause, a game or a moment gives people a reason to turn up.

4. Promote early and often

Start weeks before. Use stories, posters, email and personal messages. A save the date image helps people plan.

5. Plan your stock

Take more of what sells, fewer of what does not. Bring a range of sizes. Have a clear rail layout.

6. Make pricing simple

A simple offer is easier to run than a complicated one. A flat percentage off is clear to everyone.

7. Get help

Running a pop-up alone is exhausting. Friends, family or volunteers help with setup, games, payments and breaks.

8. Have a way to take payments

Card and cash. Check your card reader is charged and your internet works.

9. Keep it fun

Music, games and food help. If people enjoy themselves, they stay longer and tell their friends.

10. Capture the day

Take photos and short videos. Ask people if they are happy to be photographed. Content from the day helps you for weeks.

One more

Write down what you learned while it is fresh. What sold? What did not? What would you change?

Our own take

The best part is meeting people in person. Seeing someone try something on and smile is better than any number on a screen.
