Oversized or Regular Fit? How to Choose

Fit changes everything. The same hoodie can look sharp or sloppy depending on how it sits. Here is how to decide.

Regular fit

What it is. Clothing cut to follow your body without clinging. Shoulders sit at the shoulder, sleeves end at the wrist and length finishes at the hip.

Good for: work, smart casual, layering under coats, a neat everyday look.

Watch out for: too small a size will feel tight when you move or layer.

Oversized fit

What it is. A looser, boxier shape with a dropped shoulder and extra length.

Good for: relaxed weekends, travel, layering, a streetwear look.

Watch out for: too much fabric can swamp a smaller frame. Keep the rest of the outfit simple.

How to decide

Ask yourself:

  1. Where will I wear this most? Work and dinners lean regular. Weekends and travel lean oversized.
  2. What will I layer it under or over? Under a coat, choose regular. Over a tee on its own, choose either.
  3. How do I feel in it? If you are comfortable and confident, that is the right fit.

Balance the proportions

If your top is oversized, keep the bottom fitted or straight. If your top is fitted, you can go looser below. Avoid wide on wide unless you like that shape.

Tricks for oversized pieces

  • Show a bit of the neck or wrists so you do not disappear
  • Roll the sleeves if they are long
  • Tuck the front of a tee under to give shape

Sizing up and down

If you want an oversized look, go one size up from your usual. If you prefer regular, stay true to size. Check the garment measurements to be sure.

Our view

We like a relaxed fit that still looks considered. Not too small, not too big, comfortable enough to live in.
