Manchester has a big heart and plenty of organisations that need support. You do not need a lot of time or money. Here are ten ways to get involved.
1. Donate to a foodbank
Manchester Central Foodbank supports over 1,200 people every month across central, east and north Manchester. It is part of the Trussell network and began in 2013 as the first student-led foodbank in the UK. You can give food or money at justgiving.com/m-c-f.
2. Support Wood Street Mission
Wood Street Mission supports children and families in Greater Manchester who are living in poverty. We held a coffee morning at Side Street Café to raise money for them. Donations of money, clothes and toys all help.
3. Volunteer your time
Many charities need people for sorting donations, running events and helping on the day. Even a few hours a month makes a difference.
4. Run a collection at work
Set up a box in your office and share a needs list. Colleagues often want to help but need a prompt.
5. Host a small fundraiser
Coffee mornings, quiz nights and bake sales work. You do not need a big event. Pick a cause, set a goal, tell people.
6. Give clothes, but give well
Donate clean, wearable items. Winter coats, shoes, children's clothes and school uniform are often needed. Ask the charity what they need first.
7. Share their posts
It sounds small, but sharing a charity's appeal helps it reach people who might give. Add a line about why you care.
8. Support local businesses that give back
Choose shops, cafés and brands that give to the community. Ask how they do it and what the money goes toward.
9. Offer your skills
Photographers, designers, accountants, writers, drivers. Charities often need exactly the things you already do well.
10. Check in on your neighbours
Not every need appears on a charity list. An older neighbour, someone new to the area, someone going through a hard time. A knock on the door can mean a lot.
Start with one thing
Pick one from this list and do it this month. Then do another.
