What Is a Social Impact Clothing Brand?

You see the phrase more and more. It sounds good, but what does it actually mean?

The short version

A social impact clothing brand is one where doing good is part of the business model, not an add-on. The clothes pay for something real, and the brand is open about what.

What it is not

It is not a brand that posts about a charity once a year. It is not a slogan on a tee with no money behind it. And it is not a brand that uses a good cause as a reason to cut corners elsewhere.

What it looks like in practice

For us at More Amoure, it means:

  • A fixed commitment. 10% of every profit goes to More Action.
  • Showing up in person. We do not just donate from a distance. We went to schools in Ghana, spoke to people on the streets in Birmingham, drove food to families in Telford and filled a garage in Manchester for a food drive.
  • Telling the story. After every mission we write it up, with the real numbers and names (with consent).
  • Partnering with local charities. Manchester Central Foodbank, Wood Street Mission, Telford Crisis Support.

Why it matters for clothing

Fashion is one of the most visible industries in the world. People wear it every day. That makes it a strong place to carry values. If what you wear says something, why not let it say something that helps?

How to tell if a brand is the real thing

Ask these questions:

  1. Is there a clear percentage or amount, not just "a portion"?
  2. Can you see what it paid for?
  3. Does the brand tell you who it worked with?
  4. Does the quality of the clothing stand up on its own?

A good social impact brand should be worth buying even if you ignored the cause. The cause is the bonus.

Our own story

We are a Manchester social impact clothing brand supported by The King's Trust. Read our full story on the About page and see the impact so far on the homepage.
