Cost Per Wear: What a Hoodie Is Really Worth

Price tags only tell you part of the story. Cost per wear tells you the rest, and it is the easiest way to work out what a hoodie is really worth to you.

The cost per wear sum

Divide the price by the number of times you wear it. A £30 hoodie worn 10 times costs £3 a wear. A £70 hoodie worn 100 times costs 70p. The cheaper tag ends up being the more expensive buy.

Be honest with the number of wears. Think about how often you reach for a piece in a normal month, then multiply by how long it will realistically last.

Why it works

It rewards pieces you actually wear and punishes impulse buys. That sale item you bought because it was a bargain? If it stays on the hanger, its cost per wear is the full price, every time.

It also changes how you shop. You stop asking "is it cheap?" and start asking "will I live in this?"

What raises your wears

  • Good fit, so you reach for it
  • Neutral colours that go with everything
  • Strong fabric that survives washing
  • Pieces you love, not pieces you tolerate

Fit is the big one. If you are unsure of your size, learn how to measure yourself for a hoodie before you order. A hoodie that almost fits gets worn twice.

A quick example

Say you buy a black hoodie and wear it twice a week for a winter. That is around 40 wears before you even count spring and autumn. Now say you buy a bright, loud one that only works with one pair of trousers. You might wear it six times. Same shelf, very different value.

A fair warning

A higher price does not always mean better quality. Check fabric and stitching before you decide. Feel the weight, look at the seams, and see whether the cuffs and hem look like they will hold their shape.

Also, cost per wear is not a reason to spend more than you can afford. It is just a way to compare. A well chosen mid-priced piece often beats both ends.

Before you buy: a quick checklist

  • Can you name three outfits you would wear it with?
  • Do you already own something similar?
  • Would you still like it in two years?
  • Is the fit right on you, not just on the model?

If you can tick all four, it is a good buy. If you hesitate on two or more, wait a week. If you still want it, it is probably worth it.

This is also the thinking behind a capsule wardrobe: fewer pieces, worn more.
