How to Layer Streetwear: A Beginner's Guide With 6 Simple Rules

Learning how to layer streetwear is not just about staying warm. Done well, it makes a simple outfit look like you thought about it. Here are six rules that keep it easy.

1. Start with a good base

A well fitted tee, long sleeve or thin hoodie. Keep it simple and neutral, because everything sits on top of it. A base that is too baggy bunches up under the next layer, so go for a clean fit here.

2. Mix textures

Pair smooth cotton with something textured, like fleece, knit or nylon. The contrast gives the outfit depth. A flat cotton tee under a chunky knit already looks more considered.

3. Play with length

Let a longer tee show under a hoodie, or a hoodie under a shorter jacket. Different hems create shape. Just keep the difference to a couple of centimetres, not a whole hand.

4. Balance proportions

If the top half is big, keep the bottoms slimmer. Bulk in one place only. Not sure how loose to go? Our guide to oversized vs regular fit helps.

5. Keep colours calm

Two or three colours across all layers. Use one brighter piece for interest.

6. Finish with accessories

A cap, a beanie or a crossbody bag completes the look without more layers.

A quick example

Black tee, cream knit, dark gilet, tapered sweatpants, clean trainers. Four layers, nothing fighting.

Common layering mistakes

  • Too many thick layers, so you cannot move your arms
  • Three different patterns at once
  • Collars and hoods fighting for the same space
  • Forgetting that you will take layers off indoors

How many layers is enough?

Two or three for most days. Add a fourth only when it is properly cold. More layers does not mean a better outfit, it often just means a hotter commute.

Can I layer with just a hoodie?

Yes. A tee, a hoodie and a jacket is already a full layered look. Start there and build up once it feels natural.

Where to start tomorrow

Open your wardrobe and pick one base, one middle layer and one outer layer from pieces you already own. Try them together in the mirror. Swap one item at a time until it feels right. That is how most good outfits are found.
