To style a snapback cap, keep the colour simple, wear the brim at a natural angle and let the rest of the outfit stay relaxed. A cap should finish a look, not fight with it.
Get the fit right first
A snapback has an adjustable strap, so you can set it so it sits comfortably without squeezing. If you need more help, read How to Choose a Cap That Fits.
Flat or curved brim?
A curved brim is softer and easier on most faces. A flat brim is bolder and more street. Try both in a mirror and go with the one that feels like you.
Match the colours
Black goes with everything. A lighter cap works well with a darker outfit, and a dark cap lifts a cream or grey hoodie. Keep to two or three colours overall.
Outfits that work
- Hoodie, sweatpants and clean trainers
- Plain tee, black jeans and a zip jacket
- Long sleeve, cargos and boots
- Tracksuit set with a cap in the same tone
What about hair?
Wear it however you like. If you have longer hair, let it sit out at the back or the sides. If you have braids or locs, a looser strap setting helps. A cap should be comfortable, not a headache.
Should you wear one indoors?
Common sense applies. If you are somewhere formal, a family home or a restaurant that asks for it, take it off. It is a small thing and people notice.
Can you wear a cap and a hood?
You can, but check the layering. Hood up over a cap looks bulky, so wear the hood down and keep the cap as the feature. Read more in How to Accessorise Streetwear Without Overdoing It.
How do you look after a cap?
Spot clean it with a damp cloth and a little mild soap. Avoid soaking it, which can warp the brim. Let it air dry on a rounded surface, like a bowl, so it keeps its shape, and store it somewhere it will not get squashed.
