7GG vs 12GG Knit: What Is the Difference?

A 7GG knit is mid weight with a visible texture, while a 12GG knit is fine, smooth and lighter. Neither is better, they just suit different jobs.

What the numbers mean

GG is gauge, the count of needles per inch on the knitting machine. Seven needles per inch gives larger stitches. Twelve gives much smaller ones. If you want the basics first, read what GG means in knitwear.

How they look

7GG shows its stitches. You can see the texture, and it reads as casual and relaxed. 12GG looks smoother and sharper from a distance, closer to a fine fabric than a chunky knit.

How they feel to wear

Because 7GG is usually thicker, it tends to feel warmer and more substantial. 12GG tends to feel lighter and drapes closer to the body. Yarn choice changes this a lot, so use gauge as a clue, not a promise.

Which one layers better?

This is where 12GG shines. A fine knit slips under a jacket or coat without adding bulk, and it works under a collar. 7GG is better as the top layer, where its texture can be seen. For more on stacking pieces, see our beginner's layering guide.

Quick comparison

  • 7GG: more texture, more presence, wear it as the main layer
  • 12GG: smoother, lighter, easier to layer, easier to dress up
  • Both: work with tapered trousers and clean trainers

Which should you buy first?

If you wear jackets and coats most days, start with a 12GG so it fits under them. If you want one jumper that does the talking on its own, go 7GG. Plenty of people end up with one of each.

Do I need to check anything else?

Yes. Fit and fibre matter just as much as gauge. Try the jumper on, move your arms, and check how it sits at the shoulder. Our knit jumper fit guide walks through it. If you are still unsure, think about your week. Lots of time in offices, cars and heated trains suggests a finer knit you can wear indoors without overheating. More time outside, walking or standing around, suggests something thicker. Your wardrobe matters too: if you already own plenty of chunky pieces, a finer one will balance things out nicely. Buy for the life you actually have, not the one in the photo.
