A knit jumper fits properly when the shoulder seam sits near your shoulder, the sleeves end at your wrist and the hem lands around your waistband. Start there and adjust for the look you want.
Start with the shoulders
The seam should sit close to the edge of your shoulder. If it hangs down your arm, the jumper is oversized, which can look good if you meant it. If it pulls up toward your neck, it is too small.
Check the sleeves
They should reach the wrist bone, or just past it for a relaxed look. Ribbed cuffs should hold gently without squeezing. Push them up your forearm and see if they stay.
Look at the length
For a regular fit, the hem should sit at your waistband or just below. A longer hem works with a looser, streetwear shape. Avoid a hem that rides up when you lift your arms.
Think about the rib
The ribbing at the hem and cuffs is what holds the shape. It should spring back and not feel baggy. If it sags in the shop, it will sag at home.
Plan your layers
Decide what goes underneath before you buy. A tee only needs a normal size. A shirt with a collar, or a hoodie, may need more room. Our guide to oversized vs regular fit helps you choose.
Quick try-on checklist
- Raise both arms and check the hem
- Cross your arms and check the shoulders

Does gauge change the fit?
It can. Chunky knits sit boxier and fine knits sit closer. See what GG means in knitwear for why. Do not forget to take your time. Try the jumper with the clothes you will really wear it with, in front of a proper mirror, and walk around in it for a minute. A knit that feels good after five minutes will feel good after five hours. If you are buying online, compare your measurements with a jumper you already love before you commit, and keep notes for next time. Take photos in the fitting room if you can. Photos show things the mirror hides, like a sleeve that is a touch long or a shoulder seam sitting in the wrong place. It is a quick habit that saves you returns.
