How to Make a Plain Tee Look Better: 5 Easy Upgrades

A plain tee is the foundation of most outfits. The difference between a dull one and a good one is mostly in the details. Here is how to make a plain tee look better, using what you probably already own.

1. Check the fit

The shoulder seam should sit on your shoulder. The sleeve should end around mid bicep. The hem should land around the hip. If it is longer, it can still work when you want a relaxed look, but then keep the rest of the outfit tidy.

2. Layer it

An overshirt, a bomber or a zip jacket over a tee instantly gives a plain outfit shape and depth. Try a white tee, black zip jacket and dark jeans. It is simple and it works.

3. Add one accessory

A cap, a chain or a watch is plenty. One good detail beats five average ones.

4. Play with proportion

Pair a relaxed tee with tapered bottoms, or a fitted tee with wider trousers. Contrast looks intentional.

5. Keep it fresh

Fabric matters here too. A heavier cotton tee drapes better and holds its shape, so it tends to look sharper on its own.

Wash it inside out, avoid high heat and replace it when the collar loses shape. A tired tee ruins a good outfit.

Plain tee outfits that work

  • Black tee, grey sweatpants, white trainers and a cap.
  • White tee, navy overshirt, dark trousers and boots.
  • Cream tee, black bomber, black jeans and clean trainers.

Common plain tee mistakes

  • A neckline that is too wide or stretched.
  • Sleeves that go past the elbow when you did not mean it.
  • A thin, see-through white tee with nothing over it.
  • Wearing it creased. A quick press or a steam makes a difference.

Should I tuck in a plain tee?

A half tuck, just the front, can sharpen a look with trousers. With sweatpants, leave it out. Choose whichever suits your proportions, and check the mirror from the side as well as the front.

What colour tee is most useful?

Black and white are the safest. Grey and cream are close behind. Start there, then add a colour when you are ready. Olive and navy are good first steps because they sit well with black and grey.
