Manchester has always had a sound, and a look to go with it. Manchester style, music and streetwear are tied together, and as a Manchester brand we feel that every day.
A city of bands
Joy Division, The Smiths, The Stone Roses and Oasis all had their own look. Parkas, trainers, bucket hats and long coats were part of it. Joy Division leaned on dark, plain, long coats. The Stone Roses and the baggy scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s brought flares, loose tops and bucket hats. Oasis made the parka and clean trainers a Saturday uniform.
The Haçienda era
The Haçienda opened in 1982 and became the centre of a club scene that mixed music, art and fashion. Baggy shapes and bold graphics followed. Dance music and club nights changed what people wore: comfortable, loose and ready to move.
Rain and practicality
Manchester weather means clothes have to work. Layers, hoods and decent outerwear are second nature. Nobody here is surprised by a shower, so a good jacket is not a style choice, it is a survival tool. That practical streak is a big part of why streetwear fits the city so well.
A community of makers
Independent shops, markets and labels keep the city creative. The Northern Quarter is the obvious example, with record shops, vintage rails and small brands all within a short walk. Musicians, designers, photographers and makers tend to overlap, and that keeps the scene feeling local rather than copied from somewhere else.
What made Manchester style stick?
- Music first: the clothes followed the bands and the clubs.
- Practical layers: built for rain and long nights.
- Understated confidence: a plain jacket, worn well.
- Do it yourself spirit: people made their own scene.
How to wear Manchester style today
Keep it simple. A good parka or zip jacket, a clean hoodie, relaxed trousers and trainers. Add a bucket hat if it suits you. Nobody needs to dress like a 1990s album cover, but borrowing the attitude helps. For ideas on layers, see layering for a UK winter.
